Nonprofit Companies

64% of the museums that participated in the Listening Post Project conducted by Lester Salamon et al at John Hopkins University Center for Civil Society Studies have "shovel-ready infrastructure projects" which cannot go forward as planned because of the economic down-turn. The study surveyed more than 1800 nonprofit organizations: museums, community and economic development agencies, elderly housing agencies, theaters, children and family service agencies, clinics, educational organizations, and orchestras. Almost half of these nonprofit projects are planned to occur in urban areas. The study concludes that there is significant potential for jobs right now if some of the economic stimulus would be directed towards the nonprofit sector to pay for new construction and renovations that are already planned.
